For our first regular meeting of 2018 we have James Weakly from nib speaking about Sparse Distributed Memory and Hierarchical Temporal Memory and it's role in Artificial Intelligence. What is intelligence, and how can we build a software implementation of it? This subject has kept brilliant researchers occupied for decades and many billions of dollars have been spent on it, but how much real progress has been made? This is a personal talk which charts James’ own journey from indifference, to excitement, to disillusionment and beyond, concluding with a deep dive on a project he thinks is the most promising way forward to true AI.

Speaker Bio:
James is an IT professional and amateur futurist from Newcastle, Australia. Currently a Data Architect at nib, with a varied professional background in IT spanning software design / development / delivery, systems integration and network operations. He has held a strong interest in Artificial Intelligence for over a decade.
