True Grit - Charles Portis
This month we will be discussing Charles Portis's 1968 classic Western (no, put down True Girt : The Unauthorised History of Australia). The story follows 14 year old Mattie Ross, who, in seeking justice for the murder of her father, hires a deputy Marshal, Rooster Cogburn, a man with a history of violence and the required "grit" to help her track down his killer. She accompanies him and the Texas Ranger, LeBoeuf, who is also in pursuit of the villain Tom Chaney. Filmed twice, earning John Wayne an Oscar in 1969, and again in 2010 by the Coen brothers, whose screenplay more closely follows the book.
