Meetup Changes Anger Community

Meetup does it again... now they are forcing all groups to adopt a standard color scheme where the only options is a white background.... obviously this is harsh for night photography and, well, just plain harsh. It means when the change is imposed, all of our old content will become unreadable if we used white or light colored text (as we often do) to highlight things. AND THERE IS NO WAY to fix it.

Our 16 pending events will also require manual rewriting where we are using light colors and all of our illustrations taken against a dark background will be wrong.

This isn't the first time Meetup has imposed sweeping, ill considered heavy handed changes.

They have left only two avenues to address them:

1. UserVoice (which seems like a joke since the top vote getting ideas from 2 years ago have not been addressed. and
2. Emailing to

I feel for the people at Meetup who are having to deal with all of the anguish that bad decisions have caused.

Back in the great debacle of 2011, Meetup rolled out a new layout to the surprise and disgust of nearly all of the Meetup organizers and members. Gone were a lot of the familiar options which were replaced by an assortment of bad ideas and confusing formatting. The forums were on fire with complaints (and in fact, Meetup apparently got tired of hearing about how mad people were and closed down the FORUMS as of March, 2013). There were 36 pages of requests to cancel or revert back to the previous version of the page layout.

Update June 24, 2011: Meetup recently rolled out some fixes to address many of the problems they created earlier however in my (Steven Christenson's opinion) they have still badly shot themselves in the foot and needlessly angered many.

This group - Bay Area Night Photography does not allow "Members to suggest meetups" (aka Meetups in the Making) because the mechanism is broken. For an example of how poor the implementation is, see here and read the mess and disappointment from confused members.

If you have ideas for features that you'd like to see in Meetup, please look here.
