Azure offers thousands of security features. Some of them are easy to use and others are complicated. Some are free to use and some look really, really expensive. Which ones should I be using for my applications?
In this talk we’ll look at some ways to reason about which security controls you might want to apply and why. We’ll consider groups of Azure security features through a pragmatic lens of security best practices and defense-in-depth/breadth, but tempered by the reality that “more security” is not always the answer, but rather “what is the right security” for a situation. By the end of this talk you should have a better idea of the security feature set offered by Azure, why/when they might or might not be needed, and have discussed some ways to reason about how which are relevant you by helping you think about how to assess appropriately for multiple situations. Bill Wilder is a cloud computing veteran, with deep expertise in the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, with a technology focus on public cloud, distributed systems architecture, and application security. Since 2014, Bill has been CTO at Finomial, a SaaS company serving the global hedge fund industry from the cloud. Prior to that, Bill consulted as a hands-on architect to giant corporations (including Microsoft), mid-sized companies, and startups, helping them execute on the cloud by providing architecture guidance, Azure training, and custom development. Bill began working with the Azure cloud platform on the day it was unveiled at the Microsoft PDC in 2008 and subsequently founded, in October 2009, Boston Azure, the oldest Azure-focused community user group in the world. Bill is the author of the book Cloud Architecture Patterns (O’Reilly Media, 2012) which explains patterns and concepts core to understanding how to most effectively use public cloud platforms such as those from Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. Bill is recognized by Microsoft as a 10x Microsoft Azure MVP, a reflection of his Azure cloud expertise, a willingness to share it, and community leadership. Bill has recently begun teaching the graduate course in security Azure as adjunct faculty for the Masters program in Cybersecurity at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.
