Let’s get together at a brewery or restaurant and play the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition starter set adventure: The Lost Mines of Phandelver.
This is an opportunity for inexperienced players to sample the game in a friendly learn-to-play environment. Experienced gamers are also welcome if they are interested in a game which will remain squarely within the confines of the Starter Set box.
Q: The adventure is scaled for five players. What if more than 5 people are interested?
A: If 10, 15, or even 20 people would like to come out to the game, we’ll play the 5 characters collaboratively! This means five tables of 2-4 players will collaboratively decide the actions which guide the fates of the characters! D&D is a social game. Let’s take that a step further!
Q: Is experience necessary?
A: Absolutely not. The aim of the group is to introduce new players to the game, and to provide a social experience for new and veteran gamers to network and create their own groups.
Q: Do I need any Dungeons & Dragons books, character sheets, dice or minis?
A: Nope. Everything needed to play the game that evening will be provided.
Q: Will we need to create characters?
A: Nope! The box set comes with 5 pregenerated characters that are scaled for the adventure and gives them each a purpose in the story. Players can choose which character they’d like to play.
Q: I’ve already played the Lost Mines of Phandelver. Why would this interest me?
A: Come and play it again, and experience the adventure through a different Dungeon Master (me)! Or use it as a social experience to meet new players and find new gaming groups to play with. Think of it as a nerdy networking event.
Q: Sounds good! Where and when?
A: As soon as the membership of this Meet Up group hits 20, I will secure a venue and a date; most-likely a bar or restaurant on a weekday evening that isn’t traditionally busy, starting at 8:00 PM.
What to expect: we’ll start by choosing from the pregenerated characters that are included in the box set to play through the game with (two fighters, a cleric, a wizard, and a rogue). If more than 5 people show up, we’ll play characters collaboratively - which is to say if 10-15 people show up, then two-to-three people will collaboratively play each character, making decisions, rolls and deductions together. This is ideal for a learn-to-play setting and makes for an even more social experience. We did this with great success in our first session, where 10 players were in attendance.
We're going to dive right in and pick up where we left off after our May 7 game. If you were not in attendance, not to worry! We'll provide a full recap of the previous session's story to make sure everyone knows what's going on.
Learning will occur as we play through the adventure, and we'll stop for brief rule explanations in their proper context as needed. The Basic Box Set is “rules light,” designed specifically for new players who have no experience. So if you’re concerned about your lack of rules knowledge, don't be! This is the environment you want to be in!
It will take anywhere for 6-12 events to get through the Lost Mines Of Phandelver (this is event no. 2), so if you can’t make an event, not to worry. Drop into whatever sessions fit into your schedule and we'll make sure to fill you in on the details.
Please RSVP if you’d like to attend this event so I can properly prepare. I’d appreciate it.
