There's a saying that goes like this - when trucks stop, America stops.
Well actually, truth is it is more than a saying - it's the title of a real report prepared by the American Trucking Association that details what would happen if the trucking industry went down.
Serious stuff. In fact they say that it would only be a matter of time (like 2-3 days) before people in many places would be running out of food.... and that could be you.
As a trucker myself (who's also hauled food for many years) I can testify to the fact that America is not prepared for a truck stoppage. Grocery stores operate on what's called JIT (Just-In-Time) freight. That means that as soon as the truck backs into the dock of a store the freight is being off loaded and placed on the shelves. Those bananas that you just purchased could very well have come off of a truck this morning!
But there's more to our food system that's going on... and some of it is pretty shocking. The problem is that a lot of people are in the dark.
