Ski Mt. Baker after Lunch at the Raven Hut

  • Mar 30, 2014 · 12:00 PM

The last THREE lunch and ski Meetups have landed on powder weekends, and we would love to keep this record we are scheduling a fourth!  And just coincidentally, the forecast is calling for a flaky weekend.    All skiers welcome!

Mt. Baker and the surrounding area is a gem with a lot of great facets to ski.  Let's ski it together.  People travel from all over the world to ski here.  I've met them on the lifts and in the back-country.  I count among this years adventures in-bounds, side-country, back-country, and the local park, but that last one was in Bellingham on my rock skis on a rare snow day.  Almost regardless of the level of skiing difficulty and state of perfection of the snow I like to ski!

My hope is to establish a better link between active skiers to explore the wide range of options available in the Mt. Baker area.  A critical mass of skiers that would make activities both safer and funner.  But I thought I would try and keep it simple to start with by seeing if anyone will meet for a ski after lunch.

I hope to keep the invitations coming.  I skied through the month of June last year when there was still good snow in spots.

A big thanks to all who shared turns on an unexpectedly challenging technical snow day. Deep dreamy snow on the top turned into snow that didn't like to compress or scrape in the middle and required much effort from the legs to move at all.....and the visibility shifted towards the invisibility spectrum. But the group was still determined to hit the steeps!
Awesome! Finally I moved solo back to chair 8 and found better conditions, the snow didn't seem as compressed, and fresh snowfall down below made for some very good turns, still a fresh powder line or two through the trees!

*Extra* for those who get Mt. Baker humor. I am at the Salmon lodge exactly 10 minutes after all the lifts stop running and the sun finally decides to boil through the clouds and bathes the ski area in warm sun. So an employee immediately seizes the opportunity and mentions to me with a big smile that I can't say it wasn't another sunny day at Mt. Baker.

Hi Rochelle, That's rotten timing, it's snowing hard up there now and getting colder, should be really good tomorrow. I hope things turn around and you can join in. Was looking forward to a few early turns. Keep me posted. I'll check my mail early in the morning to see if you're going to make it. R & R. Cheers.

    Hey Paul,

We'll almost certainly be downstairs at the Raven Hut, it really hasn't been too busy lately. I wear a bright red but older Columbia jacket, and I will have my black BCA float 22 airbag with me, which I usually put on the table to help identify things. I will be looking for you as well. Good day to be up there, snowed very hard all day, and it's getting colder! See ya tomorrow!
