‘Till one shall make our story shine
In the fierce light it craves.’

Major John Ebenezer Stewart, M.C. (WW1 soldier)

The Battle of the Somme in World War One was the bloodiest battle in UK history. There were more than 57000 casualties on day one alone. Now, as part of the UKs national commemoration of the 100th anniversary of World War One, we are exploring the human stories about war and its relationship to kindness. Could a kind society ever go to war? What happens to kindness when people are given a gun and tasked with killing people and destroying landscapes? And why does war often inspire some of the most extensive acts of kindness between people.

That’s why, in partnership with 14-18 NOW (https://www.1418now.org.uk/), Norfolk & Norwich Festival (http://www.nnfestival.org.uk/), and Writers’ Centre Norwich (http://www.writerscentrenorwich.org.uk/) we are running writing and filmmaking workshops. Let by professional poet Heidi Williamson and in partnership with BBC Voices. You’ll get to focus on crafting and shaping a story or experience or thought about war and kindness, and then make a film about your piece.

Open to everyone from experienced writers to beginners; these 2 evening workshops will help you create you own piece of writing. Based around the idea of kindness in war. Later there will be an opportunity to work with BBC Voices on a small film piece. The films will be shown online, at the Imperial War Museum in London, and at Cinema City in Norwich.

If you would like to tell your story, share your thoughts about war and kindness, or even write some fiction or poetry, book your FREE place today.
