• May Bank Holiday Weekend at Langdon Beck

    Langdon Beck

    £89.00

Our weekends away in the Yorkshire Dales have always been amongst our most popular e.g. Hawes, Malham, Lyttondale etc. This time we are going just to the North of the Yorkshire Dales National Park into the North Pennines AONB which is equally lovely. As we never seem to want these weekends to end, this time we have made an attempt to deal with that by utilising a Bank Holiday weekend where 3 nights away are possible rather than the usual two. We hope you like that plan. YHA Langdon Beck in a brilliant location next to the River Tees and just above the renowned High Force and Low Force crashing waterfalls provides us with brilliant walking routes in ever direction from challenging through to easy but rewarding strolls along the river. Plenty to do for everyone. Here's our advance plan for walk options over the weekend but these will get discussed after arrival and can be modified to suit the mix of people on the weekend. Something for everybody we hope. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RSOo2JFyvuPZAtSg0Ih8CiR7LqEqrDxy76wQtSldZEU/edit?usp=sharing This can also be accessed in OS map form. http://www.peakmeetupgroup.com/mbh2019/ Lift sharing is always recommended and we have a specific lift sharing message board for this event as below. https://www.meetup.com/peak-district-meetup-group/messages/boards/thread/51937642/ Other than the Friday evening meal which is not included, all food is included throughout the weekend and vegetarians and other special dietary requirements will be catered for. Help yourself cooked breakfasts and packed lunches are provided as is dinner on Saturday night and Sunday night but please bring desserts, cakes and other goodies to share as well as your own drinks. Tea and coffee will be provided. Accommodation is single sex bunk rooms of a variety of sizes with full bedding provided but not towels. Total cost for the weekend including all food, accommodation and walks is now just £89.00 (including THREE nights accommodation) which needs to be paid when you book. If you have to cancel more than 28 clear days before the event start date you will get a full refund less 15% cancellation fee. If you cancel with less than 28 but more than 14 clear days notice the cancellation fee increases to 50%. No refunds will be provided to those cancelling with less than 14 clear days notice unless the event is otherwise full and we can re-sell your place. ("clear" means does not include event start date or cancellation date!). Other meetup groups do trips at similar venues for more than twice our full price which is only possible as all of our organisers and helpers are unpaid volunteers and we only seek to cover our costs on weekends.

  • West Highland Way Adventure 2019

    Needs a location

    £199.00

BOOKINGS FOR THIS EVENT NOW CLOSED! We are now just over a month away from our magical trip along the West Highland Way in Scotland which is bound to be a brilliant highlight for the group. Most places were reserved by interested members last June when the idea of doing this was first raised but we have now secured further places so a small number of additional bookings can be taken. Whilst some will want to do the first days walk from Glasgow for completeness, this is not a very exciting part of the overall route so we have made this first day optional with everyone then gathering at Balmaha on Thursday night to set off in earnest on Good Friday. We will arrive in Fort William, weary but happy on the following Wednesday afternoon (24th). Here is a map of our planned route:- http://www.peakmeetupgroup.com/whw2019/ Our costings include all accommodation between the Thursday arrival in Balmaha and our arrival in Fort William and baggage transfer (20kg per person) for each overnight stay in between. Whilst most of the accommodation is hostel based or similar, we have allowed for one twin/double roomed hotel stay in the middle as a special treat! A full breakdown of the itinerary and options is available at the following link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13llY5KUqGIwccjzW6VvZOfD9xZGfduKaT3y0A39zJ3Y/edit?usp=sharing Our costings do not include travel, to and from Scotland, accommodation for Wednesday 17th for those planning to do the Glasgow to Balmaha walk on the Thursday or accommodation once we arrive in Fort William which due to everybodys differing arrival and departure requirements we will leave to be done individually. We shall collect a £40 per person food kitty contribution for all the meals we purchase collectively but individuals should make there own payments for pub / hotel meals out. We shall keep an accurate breakdown of kitty expenditure and any surplus will be split or put towards the costs of our final meal out. Overall cost for the trip is £199 which now needs to be paid when you book. Cancellation with more than 14 clear days notice will result in a full refund less a 15% deduction but only if we can resell your place as all our costs for the trip will still have to be met. Further information will follow shortly but if you have any queries at all please address them to [masked] or[masked] (txt only please). Everyone who has done this trip raves about it afterwards and it is so much more fun in a group. Join us! Once we arrive in Fort William, some of us plan to stay on for a few days and tackle some of the amazing hills in the area including Ben Nevis via the CMD arrete if conditions are appropriate. This will be published as a separate event shortly.

  • Family Friendly Walk from Monyash

    Monyash

If you are like me over school holidays with kids at home and not quite sure what to do with them, here's another option in a lovely part of the Peak District. The plan is for a relatively easy and interesting walk of as much as 9 miles but with a much shorter option possible for any that need it. Children, teenagers and young adults are welcome to join this one as long as they are with a responsible adult member of the group (over 18) who accepts full responsibility for them at all times. Although we won't set arbitrary age limits on attendance the walk is unlikely to be suitable for under 8's unless they are already regular country walkers (as some including my own definitely are). Grown ups attending will need to be patient as we will be going slowly, making frequent stops and explaining features as we progress. The walk start opposite the church in Monyash so park where you can. The walk includes a large section of the lovely Lathkill Dale and other delights. No problem with anyone attending who hasn't got children as long as they appreciate that we may be going a bit slower than usual. Please feel free to contact me if concerned about any aspect of this event. Book kids in as guests so we can count numbers correctly.

  • 30K BIG Walk Around the Chatsworth Estate and the Derbyshire Edges

So a BIG walk of just under 20 miles but if you are not up for that distance don't panic as there are several points at which it can be shortened and for some to come back by an easier route. For those going the distance the walk includes the lovely Beeley Wood, Hob Hursts House (neolithic site), open access moorland across Gibbet Moor, Birchen Edge, Nelsons Column and the Three Ships, White Edge, Hay Wood, Froggatt Edge, Curbar Edge, Baslow Edge, Wellingtons Monument and Chatsworth Estate. Fantastic! Over distance approximately 19 miles Accumulated ascent 770 m

  • Derby Canal, Cloud Trail and River Derwent BIG Bike Ride (42 miles)

Derby Canal, the Cloud Trail and the River Derwent all provide excellent traffic free trails for bicycles so we have just added some quiet lanes to the North of Loughborough to complete a fantastic circular ride. If doing long distance rides or cycling holidays in a reasonably relaxed fashion you'd tend to be aiming for 45-50 miles in a day which is where we have pitched this ride in anticipation of several cycling weekends we have planned for later in the year. Helmets should be worn.

  • Easier Mid Week Walk from High Peak Junction

    High Peak Junction Car Park

Now part of the Derwent Valley World Heritage Site with strong associations from our industrial past, it is also a very convenient point at the Southern edge of the Peak District for many lovely walks. This time we shall initially head in a southerly direction on the Midshires Way before heading across Wirksworth Moor towards Wirksworth itself. Plenty of options for a refreshment stop here before heading onward and upward to connect with the old High Peak & Cromford Railway Line, now High Peak Trail which takes us back to the start. Overall distance approximately 7.5 miles Accumulated ascent 500 m

  • Torchlight Walk and Pub Night at Moor Green

    Horse & Groom

Moor Green was once at the heart of the Nottingham Coalfields popularised in D H Lawrence novels and highly politicised by the Miners Strike of[masked]. Now a quiet backwater near to the M1. Anyway, we are just going to enjoy a lovely torchlit walk by the reservoir (and M1) followed by the equally appealing delights of the Horse and Groom PH. Torches are definitely required for this charming evening walk with only the moonlight and stars for company and a cracking pub to finish at. As well as torches, waterproofs and walking boots are recommended. You never know what you are going to step in, in the dark. Please arrive around 6:45pm for prompt 7pm departure.
