What we're about

ODSC brings together the open-source and data science communities with the goal of helping its members learn, connect and grow.

The focus of this Meetup group is to allow #ODSC to work with Meetup groups, non-profits, and other organizations to present informative lectures, workshops, code sprints and networking events to help grow the use of open source languages and tools within the data science and data-centric community. As such, our specific goals are:

1. Build a collaborative group to work with other Meetup groups, non-profits, and other organizations.

2. Promote the use of open source languages and tools amongst data scientists and others.

3. Host educational workshops.

4. Spread awareness of new open source languages and tools that can be used in data science.

5. Contribute back to the open-source community.

Who is this meetup for?

Online event

We want to invite you to participate in the FREE ODSC Webinar “3 Tips I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Data Scientist”! Harvard Business Review describes a Data Scientist to be the “sexiest job of the 21st century”, and with a good reason. In this ever moving world of Big Data and Analytics, every business needs Data Scientists who can apply analytics to make sense and create value from the data they have. It allows organizations to gain insights and make better and faster decisions. So, what really does a day-to-day look like for a Data Scientist? In this webinar, I will share my personal experience of my journey as a Data Scientist, the job beyond the algorithms, and 3 key takeaways that will be applicable for anyone wanting to pursue a career in Data Science. Date: September 24 Time: 9:30 - 10:30 am EDT To access this webinar, please register here: https://aiplus.odsc.com/courses/3-tips-i-wish-i-knew-before-becoming-a-data-scientist The webinar will be presented by Haidar Altaie - Data Scientist at SAS UK&I Haidar is a Data Scientist at SAS UKI. He joined SAS after graduating from University with a Mathematics and Statistics degree. Haidar has a passion to enable customers to understand the potential of Analytics, using AI/ML techniques across growing industries and to solve complex real-life issues. Live Training: SQL Bootcamp for Data Science

Online event

This is a PAID event. Registration is required: https://aiplus.odsc.com/courses/sql-bootcamp-for-data-science Instructor's bio: Mona Khalil is a Data Scientist at Greenhouse Software in NYC where they contribute to data-informed decision making across the company and machine learning solutions to improve the hiring process for Greenhouse customers. Abstract: By completing this workshop, you will develop a working knowledge of how to explore a relational database, how to use SQL to retrieve data from that database, and how to transform it to answer your data science questions. What will you do? - Identify the contents of and relationships between tables in a database - Write queries to aggregate, filter and sort data in a table - Join multiple tables in a relational data - Perform mathematical operations between columns - Identify the need for a subquery in order to properly transform data - Write subqueries in the FROM and WHERE clauses - Write common table expressions - Answer business questions using a combination of methods listed Who will be interested in this course? Being a core skill necessary to work with data effectively, the target audience is fairly wide and includes aspiring data analysts, business analysts, data scientists, and data engineers beginning to learn the core skills in their field. Which knowledge and skills you should have? Attendees should be familiar with the structure and manipulation of data in Excel/CSV files, but proficiency in Excel is not required. What is included in your ticket? 1. Access to the live training and a QA session with the Instructor 2. Access to on-demand recording 3. Certification of completion Use discount code - Meetup2020 - to get an extra 10% off on your pass for Virtual Conference Europe and Virtual Conference West. Webinar: "Machine Learning is Easy!"

Online event

To access this webinar, please register here: https://aiplus.odsc.com/courses/machine-learning-is-easy Topic: Machine Learning is Easy! Speaker: Dave Kaiser, Java / Kotlin / ReactJS Developer at HCSC www.linkedin.com/in/davidwkaiser Bio: Dave Kaiser is a Java / Kotlin / ReactJS Developer at HCSC. We use Extreme Programming (XP) to do amazing things with APIs and now with UIs too! Dave recently finished a Data Science Credential at DePaul and is extending his experience into Natural Language Programming. Dave has been an academic linguist, entrepreneur, and a translator for the FBI (don't ask, he can't tell you the good stories...) He is one of those odd people who think presenting is fun. Abstract: Deep Learning! Reinforcement Learning! Relational Neural Networks! It all sounds very complicated, even magical. Under the hood, it can be complicated, but new machine learning libraries give you a surprising amount of power "out of the box," and that is both amazing, and a little scary. In this talk, Dave Kaiser will show you how easy it is to train a machine learning model using Python's SciKitLearn library (hint: it only takes a few lines of code, once you have "clean" data...) , and what dangers you need to be aware of when doing so. This will help you to identify the functional, and ethical, risks found in the data revealed by deploying machine simple to use learning tools without fully understanding the mechanisms.
