YogaVision is hosting an Om Chanting Circle for World Mental Health Day on the 10th of October 2019.
World Mental Health Day was first observed in 1992 through the instigation of the World Federation for Mental Health. It's a global initiative to bring awareness on the effects of mental illnesses in people's lives. This day of celebration attempts to educate the public about mental health, advocate for it and remove the stigma of illness.
World Mental Health Day (WHMD) is promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) through various civic organizations and government ministries of health. Canada celebrated Mental Health month in May but we also support WHMD. This year's theme is suicide prevention.
The majority of suicides are preventable and many exhibits warning signs. Thus, suicide prevention plays an important role in addressing the issue. According to the World Health Organization,[masked] people commit suicide globally and that for each suicide there are 20 suicide attempts. Canadian statistics report that males are 3x more often to take their life than females. And in 2017, there were 4157 suicides in Canada, making it the 9th leading cause of death across the lifespan. But in children to young adults, Public Health Canada states suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death.
These are somber statistics.
We endeavor to promote awareness and call attention to the need of many of our youth today. We undertake our next Om Chanting Circle with this in mind. Om has the transformational power to turn negative energy into positive ones. Om Chanting has the power to purify a diameter of 2 kilometres of the local environment. With the healing vibration of our Om Chanting, we hope to send love, joy and peace to our loved ones and to those in need. We can also send this healing energy through intention to the world around us. As well, if you have someone in mind, bring their picture into the circle and let it work for you.
