The Opioid Crisis and the Pulitzer Prize: A Conversation with Eric Eyre

Details

Join ONA Pittsburgh and Public Source for a Q&A with 2017 Pulitzer Prize winner Eric Eyre of the Charleston Gazette-Mail. ONA Pittsburgh group leader Kim Lyons will ask Eyre about his work tracking the opioid crisis in West Virginia, what it’s like to find out you won a Pulitzer and whether he’s planning to use his new status to try to get out of the weekend rotation.

Eric Eyre is a statehouse reporter for the Charleston (W.Va.) Gazette-Mail. He joined the newspaper in 1998, after working as an intern at the Tampa Bay Times. At the Gazette-Mail, he has covered education, health and business. In addition to several national awards, Eyre won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting. His articles tracked the deluge of prescription painkillers into West Virginia, following them into individual counties, pharmacies and families. The series also was named "best of show" among newspapers in the National Headliners Awards, and won a Scripps Howard Award for service to the First Amendment.
