Title:
The Ten Things I Wish I Knew Before Writing .NET On Linux
Abstract:
Modern .NET runs everywhere (even refrigerators). Traditionally, we'd host our .NET apps on Windows servers, but now we can host them on Linux servers. So what is Linux, and what are some of the common pitfalls that developers who don't have much experience with the open source, penguin mascotted, operating system that Windows-based developers sometimes fall into, and what can we do about them?
In this talk, Jamie will run through ten of the issues that he ran into when starting to build and deploy .NET apps with Linux. This will include a brief "what is Linux?" and "Which Linux do I install?", but will also cover some of the trickier things like file storage and what the heck "sudo" is.
Bio:
Jamie is a Dad, mentor, teacher, business owner, podcaster, and developer (in that order). He has close to 14 years of experience working professionally with Microsoft's now opensource .NET stack.
He got started playing around with programming computers in BASIC on an Amstrad CPC 464 (think, "ZX Spectrum without all the trimmings") when he was around 6, and hasn't been able to shake the habit yet. He has been podcasting for four years (check out The .NET Core Podcast, Waffling Taylors, and Tabs and Spaces) and was a .NET blogger before that.
He's a lover of Terry Pratchett (and will talk your ear off about how Night Watch is the greatest Discworld novel ever written), attempts to play bass guitar, and can speak Japanese.
He was also awarded with a Microsoft MVP in December, 2021.
