Abstract:
Never have we seen such activity and frenzy in the information security space. From high profile data breaches to sophisticated side channel attacks affecting decades old hardware. Phishing campaigns using Office exploits and Adobe Acrobat is a common everyday occurrence. Fancy websites with obscure names flashing abstract logos are published to announce the latest critical security vulnerably. Does this mean that organisations are helpless against the relentless onslaught of sophisticated and determined criminal war machine? Should we just switch off our electronics and set fire to it?

We will look at the events of the past 12 months to guide our understanding of what is expected in fending off attackers in the digital realm. The Center for Internet Security compiled a list of 20 controls aimed at providing information security professionals clear guidance how to deploy and maintain systems that guarantee confidentiality, integrity and availability of data and infrastructure.

The goal is that we should be able to learn through the failings of others. With this perfect hindsight we will see if we can spot the correct control, action or mitigation that could have worked in a similar scenario.
