Upcoming CSK Season

To All Cleveland Sea Kayaker Members:Gerry Henwood and I have been meeting, gathering input from members and beginning to prepare for the 2014 paddling season.  We realize that we need to impose tighter safety measures and are going to require that kayakers who go out in Lake Erie beyond the break wall must demonstrate basic safety skills.  Obviously, seasoned paddlers who are known to the group will be excluded from these tests.  We sincerely hope these skilled members will continue to help the newbies along. If you go to the Meetup site you will see that there are numerous pool sessions listed where you can participate in skills drills over the winter.  In addition, on May 10, we have scheduled an outing at La Due Reservoir for safety training and skill demonstration.  The description of that outing includes more details as to what safety skills are going to be required for certain paddles.  Even if you have no interest in wet exiting or other particular activities, please attend the La Due Meetup.  There will be experienced kayakers there who will be able to work with you on strokes, maneuvers and safety issues.

We are also working on planning more fun outings.  Our plan at this point is to continue the Whiskey Island Wednesday paddles every other Wednesday.  On the alternating weekend, we are going to be planning other outings that will include Whiskey Island, La Due Reservoir and various river settings, to be determined.  At this point we are considering Saturdays at 10 am.  We welcome input from all members as to preferred times and locations we should explore.  We would love to have more paddlers come out and get wet and would love to hear from you. Please get in touch with your suggestions and input.  If you scroll through the upcoming Meetups, you will find some other great events:  The South Bass Island Rendezvous, Ohio River Paddlefest, and the Labor Day Air Show paddle among others. It's looking like it's going to be a great season!!!
We have also been working on updating the Discussion and Message Board pages.  Many members are not even aware of this website feature and it would be great to increase member involvement and share ideas about many topics.  If you want to receive notifications about these specific areas, go to your Meetup account, click on Email and Notifications, and select CSK.  You can elect to receive notifications about Meetups, Photos, Members and various Message Board Topics.  You can opt in for the areas of interest and opt out of others so you can limit items landing in your in box.
We have already gotten feedback about having too many upcoming meet ups posted, which makes it difficult to see all meet ups sat a glance.  We have decided to leave them as is this year because people have already RSVP'd and we don't want to cause more confusion.  Next year, we'll post the first event at each place (Orange, Myers and Lakewood) and include future listings in the description.   Then, when event finished, we will post the next date.  Under the Discussion/Message Board tabs, I will include the full line-up.  I do have that posted already under Upcoming meet ups.
We look forward to hearing from everyone with comments about safety, the upcoming season and anything else of importance. If you hit reply to this email, your communication will go to all CSK members.  If you wish to make a private comment, contact me or Gerry Henwood directly.  Thanks for your interest.
