Next Meetup

In our new spacious location, you are invited to watch, sing along, or play your own instrument in the club's theremin jam! Try out each of the club's theremins, and/or bring your own instrument of any kind to join in! The theremin is the instrument you "never touch"--you wave your hands over it and play by ear--classical to blues to pop. Nonalcoholic snacks are served. This casual group introduces you to the story behind the theremin, and helps you personally try it out, using live accompaniment and/or backing tracks. Invented by Russian scientist Leon Theremin, this earliest electronic instrument was introduced in 1919, and we jam with several of them on the historic Penn Theatre stage under colorful party lights. You'll meet new music friends and have plenty to hum about about the rest of the month!

What we're about

This is a group for anyone interested in learning about or playing the theremin. Invented in 1920, the theremin was the first electronic musical instrument. Remarkably, it is played without ever touching it! All skill levels are welcome. If you do not yet own a theremin, perhaps this will help you to decide whether you would like one. I want to meet other theremin players or create the interest that may attract others to play the theremin. Theremin-playing is ideal for those who cannot read sheet music (my instructor is legally blind), those unable to lift a heavy instrument, even those who have the use of only one hand. It is suitable for an adult or a child.
