What we're about

Do you know who Miles Davis is? You must also know that Bird, Trane and Cannonball are not politicians. How about Charles Mingus, Max Roach or Chick Corea? Maybe you have LP's of Oscar Peterson, J.J. Johnson or Stan Kenton or possibly Don Cherry? If this is you, you must be part of an exceptional crowd that seeks-out the solid groove or the smokin' jam session, where the sounds are cool and the standards are hot. Perhaps you are of the Latin side of jazz where Tito Puente and Poncho Sanchez moves your being. Did I see you at the Maraca and The New Collective concert at SPSCC? Or Maybe it's hearing Night and Day by Sinatra or A-Tisket, A-Tasket by Ella or perhaps Tenderly by Sarah Vaughan or Honeysuckle Rose by Joe Williams? Now you don't have to go all the way to the Lincoln Center to see Wynton Marsalis or the Village Vanguard to hear the Maria Schneider Big Band. We've got the local jazz scene right here in Olympia. Sometimes Seattle is just too far to go and I-5 can be a real headache. Sadly, the IAJE conventions are now long gone but fortunately for us, the jazz party starts here. Did you know there are about 50-Olympia based jazz musicians and vocalists who perform right here in our local community? It's time to get the word out! Come join us to create a community where the music thrives, the musicians jam and the cultured gather to support Olympia live jazz. We are your classic jazz connection in Olympia! First Sunday Tradition's Jazz Jam

Traditions Cafe

Good Greetings to All You Lovers of Jazz and The First Sunday of The Month Jazz Jam ~ John and I are missing this session more than ever as we know in our whole being how much this jam means to us and our jazz loving community. Music is a healing force: it connects us in ways we may not see ~ we feel the vibratory sensations of live music ~ it ripples through us and we in turn send that out to the wider community as we live our lives. We miss you all! We miss the improvisation, the new players and singers who graced the stage with such courage, and we certainly miss all of those who showed up every month to play, to grow, to and listen. Oh, how we miss you all! We talk about those wonderful times when someone would show up to play at 4:45 with 15 minutes left and we'd feel like the jam was just getting started!! We miss how surprised some people were when they would stumble upon the jam when all they thought they'd be doing was eating a bowl of ice cream or drinking a glass wine and conversing ~ how happy they were to have done so. And we miss all the beautiful people who work at The New Traditions Fair Trade Cafe ~ you all lifted us higher! I'm singing songs of social justice and deep freedom and physical and mental well being. I'm hoping with all my heart and soul that we will be together again, that justice will cover the land, and music sweet music will bring us to the freedom we all deserve. In the mean time please be good to each other, wash your hands, and wear a mask when you're with a bunch of people. Physically distance and be social in the best sense of the word. With a song in my heart, Susan
