Let's Hike Potato Mountain in the Dark!
We will meet at the trail head at 5:45 pm and start the hiking promptly at 6:00 pm following a 15 minute social. It will be DARK on the way down, so please bring a flashlight or head lamp! We begin at Evey Canyon entrance by side stepping the locked vehicle gate. We hike through the beautiful oaks and greenery of Evey Canyon Trail. It is possible we may hear the water run through the nearby stream to our right of the trail. About a 1 ½ miles into the hike we reach an intersection leading to the Claremont Wilderness trail to the right or Potato Mountain to the left. We will take a short break at this point and wait for the entire group to catch up. We will be hiking 5 miles round trip with 1200 feet in elevation climb. Potato Mountain sits at 3422 feet of elevation. We will wait for all to make it up to the top and take a short break to enjoy a well-deserved snack. Then we begin our descent down. Once at the intersection we will wait for the group to catch up and make the correct turn to the Evey Canyon Trail back to our cars. Level: Advanced Beginner-Moderate. This is a good hike for an advanced beginner to earn points toward their moderate hiking badge. The trail is very wide, in good shape and is mostly dirt with very few rocks to step on. If hiking this trail is too difficult for your level at this time it is OK. Turn back anytime, you can always try it again and improve next time. It is very easy to turn back and follow the trail back to the locked vehicle gate then to your car. Dogs are allowed as long as they are on leashes. Parking is located on both sides of Baldy Road and is free. No Adventure Pass is required. You are not deep enough into the forest to require an Adventure Pass.
