Topic: data.world - Enriching Your Analysis with Census Data
Summary:
Austin data startup data.world (https://data.world/) recently launched its data sharing & collaboration platform and is currently in preview release mode. This summer, data.world partnered with the US Census Bureau to ingest the American Community Survey (http://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/about.html) in a Linked Data format to help data users enrich analyses that require US demographic information. An important goal for this joint effort is to empower more data users to utilize this fundamental source of information.

About the Presenter:
Jonathan Ortiz is a data scientist and knowledge engineer at Austin data startup data.world (https://data.world/). This summer through a DataStart grant fellowship (http://renci.org/news/south-big-data-hub-links-talented-students-with-tech-startups-through-new-program/), Jonathan worked with the US Census Bureau to make Census data more accessible and easier to combine with other data sets via data.world. Jonathan believes the census has much untapped potential and hopes his work galvanizes others to unlock innovative solutions to issues facing our country for years to come.Jonathan is one of six recipients of the 2016 DataStart grant fellowship managed by RENCI and the South Big Data Hub and supported by the National Science Foundation. Jonathan is a former student at the UT Data Analytics and Big Data Program. Prior to his work in data science, Jonathan accumulated extensive experience in media, marketing, and consulting. Most recently, Jonathan served as Director at Scratch, a division of Viacom that drives innovation by channeling the power of brands like MTV, BET, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon. Jonathan received a Bachelor of Science in Economics with concentrations in Marketing and Management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
