ODC Workshop #5: Crafting Data Recipes using APIs with Socrata

Delaware's Open Data Portal comes with plenty of tools for you to build with. We're bringing in Socrata (https://socrata.com/), the company that built the Open Data Portal, to talk about how to use its API to build amazing things.

About Crafting Data Recipes using APIs

You’ve come up with a great idea, you've learned how to build a project plan for it, you've gotten some basics of front end design, and you put things on a map. If you're going to keep building out a tool to help your community, then you'll need to know how to manipulate the Open Data Portal API. There's no one better to teach you how to do that than Socrata.

In this workshop we'll bring you from the start to the finish of a (small) civic tech project. Think of it like a cooking show, where the team from Socrata will guide you through crafting your "data recipe" on the way to the final product. These skills will be invaluable in the Open Data Challenge.

About the Open Data Challenge

The Open Data Challenge (http://www.opendatachallenge.com) is a partnership with the State of Delaware's Government Information Center (http://gic.delaware.gov) and the Tech Forum of Delaware (http://techforumde.org) following the launch of Delaware's Open Data Portal (http://data.delaware.gov). The Open Data Challenge will help to build tangible, sustainable solutions for community issues using open data. The Challenge includes a series of 5 workshops curated by Open Data Delaware, the Tech Forum of Delaware's Idea Challenge, and Open Data Delaware's hackathon inspired by the National Day of Civic Hacking. Winning teams from the hackathon have the opportunity to win a cash grant following completion of their project.
