Introduction to Matrix: Open Source Instant Messaging

Details

This is an informal online meetup, I'll be showing some software on my screen and then there'll be time for some questions and answers.

Matrix is an open source project that publishes the Matrix open standard for secure, decentralised, real-time communication.

Essentially, it's a decentralised chat room that's based on HTTP and JSON.

Some people see Matrix as a successor to IRC or an open source competitor to Discord, or as an alternative to XMPP. It's all of these things and a lot more!

Join us for a short introduction and demo. We'll cover:

  • What Matrix is and what it can do
  • How to get started chatting and using Matrix
  • How to set up your own server and become part of the network
  • Some basic examples of how to interact with Matrix rooms from the command line and from inside your applications.

If you are already familar with Matrix, come join us in #opensource:glasgow.social

We have a web client you can try out at https://matrix.glasgow.social
