At our last pub meet (http://www.meetup.com/OpenAustralia-Foundation/events/203193292/), the inimitable Peter Timmins (https://twitter.com/foiguru) roused us all into action to support Freedom of Information (FOI) laws (https://www.openaustraliafoundation.org.au/2014/11/26/show-your-support-for-foi-laws-today/) and transparency by supporting the continued existence of the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
We're relieved to hear that the bill to abolish the OAIC hasn't gone through (http://foi-privacy.blogspot.com.au/2014/12/bill-to-abolish-office-of-information_4.html) although unfortunately it doesn't sound like that's the last we'll hear about it (http://www.itnews.com.au/News/398610,senate-wind-up-means-oaic-will-stay8230for-now.aspx). We'd love to get together with people interested in FOI, transparency, and open government for some social drinks before the year's out.
Or as Peter puts it...
"If you were agitated, engaged or just concerned about the Federal Government's recent unsuccessful attempt to abolish the Office of Australian Information Commissioner, join a group of like minded for a drink and mix around before such thoughts are replaced by summer torpor."
See you there.
