Title:
Practical IoT with Kafka

Abstract:
The Internet of Things (IoT) has arrived, transforming everything from our retail experiences to the household electronics that amaze us, to the complex manufacturing processes requiring automation and real-time monitoring at every step. Real-time event-driven systems are critical in IoT -- stale inventory numbers yield unhappy shoppers, batch-driven QA processes waste valuable time on the manufacturing floor, and late-arriving vehicle locations introduce guesswork into fleet management and routing decisions. In this session, we build a practical IoT solution for fleet management and outline a reference architecture positioning Kafka as the event and streaming processing backbone of an end-to-end IoT monitoring and analytics solution.

Bio:
Dave Troiano is a Solutions Engineer at Confluent, the enterprise event-streaming platform pioneer. Previously he has worked at startups at the intersection of distributed systems and machine learning, helping companies to scale their machine learning efforts and apply ML to search, recommendation engines, and financial modeling. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time outside with his family and backyard chickens.

Title:
Inside ksqlDB

Abstract:
In this meetup, we’re going to learn the fundamentals of ksqlDB. ksqlDB, the database for stream processing applications, is becoming one of the most popular ways to work with Apache Kafka®. Every day, there are many questions about the project, but here’s a question with an answer that we are always trying to improve: How does ksqlDB work?

The mechanics behind stream processing can be challenging to grasp. The concepts are abstract, and many of them involve motion—two things that are hard for the mind’s eye to visualize. In this talk, I'll open the hood of ksqlDB to explore its essential elements: rows, streams, tables, view materialization. We’ll look at how each of these works and how it all relates to Kafka, then we will see how to use ksqlDB to perform filtering and aggregation of data.
