A Machine Learning Look at Individual Florida Department of Education Test Scores
(What is going to happen and what can we do about it?)
A home's value is largely determined by its zoned schools. To summarize school quality, the state of Florida issues annual school grades. A major portion of the school grade calculation comes from the results of state written standardized test scores. Furthermore, graduation, promotion to the next grade, and future course placement depends on a student's performance.
One district built machine learning models in December and April to improve student performance and predict results. The December models were nearest centroid classifiers, and identified individual student strengths and weaknesses on each test component. The results helped teachers and coaches adapt instruction to individual student needs. The April models were ensemble predictive models and gave administrators insight into results before being released by the state.
