Yoga & Nature for everyBODY
Outdoor Afros, Are you ready to connect with nature through your mind and body... Whatever your experience level, whether this will be your first class or one-hundredth, join us for a 60 min outdoor yoga class led by Chicago native, Kella Murphy, a certified yoga instructor. Yoga is for everyBODY... every shape, every size, every fitness and every flexibility level. Please meet at the Wallach Fountain at 11:30 to sign in and gather for our opening circle. There are benches to the right of the fountain so you don't have to stand directly on the trail. What should I wear / bring: - bring a yoga mat (can be purchased at Marshall's, Home Goods or Target for a reasonable price) - wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move and stretch (dress in layers, we'll be near the lake) - bring water and water bottle - wear comfortable shoes - wear sunscreen - wear bug repellent spray (we'll be in the grass) Donations to the instructor would be graciously accepted!!! Directions / Parking: The entrance to Promontory Point is at 55th and South Shore Drive. If you’re driving, there is a decent size metered parking lot near the entrance (55th St & South Shore Drive Parking, S Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60615). Across from the parking lot, you’ll see a walking path leading to a tunnel. Take that path to the tunnel, which goes right under Lake Shore Drive and you’ll find yourself in the park on the other side with the fountain directly in front of you. We will meet at the benches to the right of Wallach Fountain. Walking directions from the parking lot to Wallach Fountain: There are other options for parking on the streets nearby that are metered or unmetered. Although it may be difficult, it's there, you just might have to drive around for a bit to find it. (If you park somewhere else, just change your starting location to your location and follow the directions given.) (This event will repeat during the summer on the second Saturday of August (8/11): This is the targeted date but is subject to change due to instructor's availability, watch for future post.) Please make sure you review a copy of the Outdoor Afro trip waiver

What we're about

Outdoor Afro is a social community that reconnects African-Americans with natural spaces and one another through recreational activities such as camping, hiking, biking, birding, fishing, gardening, skiing — and more! Outdoor Afro disrupts the false perception that black people do not have a relationship with nature. We remember our history in nature, leverage social media, and support relevant local leadership to create interest communities, events, and partnerships that support diverse participation in the Great Outdoors.
