Lace up your ice skates, grab your good mittens!
Let's get outside on the ice, Afro friends. We'll gather at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden & Ice Rink and channel our inner Surya Bonaly, Maame Biney or Shani Davis. Cost, to be paid to the rink on site: For two 45-minute sessions (beginning on the hour): $9 for adults and children age 13 and over $8 for skaters age 50 and over, children 12 and under, and students with a valid school ID Skate rental fee is $4; lockers are available for $0.50 (with $5 deposit) We'll provide hot chocolate. The ice rink will be closed when it rains or when the temperature dips below 20°F, so please check the weather before heading out. We'll post here if the event is canceled. Dress warmly, layers are encouraged. Cotton and jeans are discouraged because once they get damp ('cause we'll all fall once, right?), they'll stay wet and keep you cold. We also recommend buying a pack of hand warmers, which can be found at most drug stores for approximately $2 each. They can stay warm for hours.

What we're about

Outdoor Afro is a community that reconnects African-Americans with natural spaces and one another through recreational activities such as camping, hiking, biking, birding, fishing, gardening, skiing — and more! Outdoor Afro uses social media to create interest communities, events, and to partner with regional and national organizations that support diverse participation in the Great Outdoors. Here is where you can start locally connecting with people who share your outdoor interests!
