Beginner’s Backpacking Overnight on Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania

Details

May 15-16: Beginner’s Hike on the Appalachian Trail: PA309 to Bake Oven Knob Easy hike for beginners. We’ll meet in Bowmanstown PA (about 2 hours from Cherry Hill) where we will drive to the end point, drop off ½ the cars, then drive to the start point. We will be hiking from PA Hwy 309 to Bake Oven Knob (about 5.9 miles) across relatively level ground (we’re “running the ridge”) passing “the Cliffs” and Bear Rocks on the way. We’ll then spend the night at the Bake Oven Knob Shelter (http://www.wikitrail.org/features/view/at/25344/bake-oven-knob-shelter), a 3-sided primitive log structure with tent sites beside it. The shelter has water and a privy. Campfires are allowed in Pennsylvania! Rumours of Smores? Note that there are no “reservations” for the shelter, so you will be sleeping with whoever shows up and wants to sleep inside. I will be tenting it.

The next day we’ll wake up and hike 3.4 miles to the end point, the parking area on Asheville Road.

Please contact me if you’d like a sample “pack list” to bring. I will be bringing a stove and two different ways to filter water if folks want to use these (instead of purchasing/packing their own).

Unlimited number of participants. Hike Leader is Kevin Drevik (856) 630-2485 or kdrevik@aol.com. No cost for trip. Please email questions to Kevin, or request pack list. I want this to be fun for all the folks coming!
