This is a group for anyone interested in all aspects of owning an historical building. I started this group because I own a 15,000 sq ft Brewery building, which was built in 1897. I found that ownership in an historical building requires a passionate interest and ability in a broad range of skills, responsibilities, and knowledge. There was an unexpected emergence of this feeling of social responsibility to preserve the architecture and history which I had not expected. And so my plans to use the building for just myself and a business changed with the expectations and gratitude of making this building accessible to the public.
This building and business is challenging and very fulfulling and at times, exhausting. You have to be keen on learning and knowing every aspect from architecture to construction to business to history to community organization. Learning to work with the government at all levels, from city to Federal is key. On top of it all is the interest from the media. Which requires the ability to speak and be comfortable explaining to the community what you are doing and what your plans are.
It takes most of my time, and I find there are very few people to share the passion, considerations, questions and knowledge with. I'd like to make this a group where we travel to each others buildings and cities and share our ownership experiences and thoughts. We welcome anyone, even those who are merely considering ownership of an historical building, and their friends.
