OxfordRUG March 2023 | Air quality data analysis
Details
For our March meetup, we are very excited to have Jack Davison giving a talk on "Developments in air quality data analysis"
Agenda:
6:00 pm: Talk "Developments in air quality data analysis" by Jack Davison
7:00 pm: Pizza!
Abstract:
According to the World Health Organisation, poor air quality is a global health risk on the same scale as unhealthy diets and smoking. It is therefore vital to understand what is in our air, where it is coming from, and how it is changing – all easier said than done! In this talk, I will discuss how R is used in the air quality community for tasks as varied as accessing UK air quality and global meteorological data, updating local authorities on pollution episodes, and carrying out “directional analysis” to understand where air pollution is coming from. In particular, I will discuss the development of the {openairmaps} package, which combines the widely used {openair} R package with the JavaScript {leaflet} library to better understand air quality monitoring data in its geospatial context.
Speaker bio:
Jack is an R developer and air quality data analyst at Ricardo Energy & Environment, an environmental consultancy in South Oxfordshire. His job involves the use of R to develop and communicate air quality data insights to clients, legislators and the general public. Much of his time is also spent teaching R to clients in the public and private sectors, with past learners including Defra, the Environment Agency, and the UK Health Security Agency. He received a PhD from the University of York analysing tailpipe emissions from road transport vehicles, and has personal interest in data visualisation and R package development.
Thanks to our sponsor:
Oxford RUG is thrilled to be sponsored by Ascent/Mango Solutions. Thanks to their generosity, there will be pizza after the talk.
