What we’re about
Hi Friends and Welcome to East Midlands Data
We're a community run Microsoft focused data user group. We provide free training, socialising, networking, recruitment, geeky debate and more on a wide range of data technology topics to anyone who wants to come along to our meetings.
Our in-person events run on the second Wednesday of every month.
To cover as much of the East Midlands as possible we currently alternate locations between Nottingham and Derby.
For additional annoucements join our community mailing list here: bit.ly/45UE6DP
Lastly, please be aware that all our events are covered by a Code of Conduct. This can be found here: bit.ly/EMD-CodeOfConduct
Thank You

Delivering Real World Actionable Finance P&L Dashboards in Power BI - Data Engineering to Analytics
Getting from data engineering to real-world analytics is always a challenge, especially in the finance sector. In this session we'll show you how to do exactly that using advanced techniques in Power BI, covering data modelling and Zebra BI custom visuals.
For example:
• How can we reduce our monthly, quarterly and yearly review meeting time and focus on measures to be taken?
• What is the best way to create actionable finance dashboards?
• How can we overcome performance issues within our P&L statement in Power BI?We'll take a look at the financial services industry from a backend and frontend perspective covering data engineering possibilities and focusing on a real-world Power BI dashboard being the most used report in a global organization. Learn everything from data modelling, power query transformations (M), high performing DAX calculations and visualization advantages to create a complete profit and loss (P&L) statement that finance and controlling can use daily.
As a bonus, learn all the skills required to add real value to your reporting approach across other industries using the Microsoft tools.___________________________________________________________________________________

Packaging Permissions in Stored Procedures
The basic mechanism when we want to give users access to data or actions in SQL Server in a controlled way through stored procedure is ownership chaining. This is something we use every day as SQL workers, although we may not be aware of it. Every once in a while, we run into situations where it seems that it is not sufficient to put a statement in a stored procedure, but that users need to be granted explicit permissions – something we may not always be comfortable with, because that would permit the users to do things we do not want them to be able to.
There are two additional mechanisms in SQL Server we can employ in these situations: certificate signing and the EXECUTE AS clause. In this session I will start by exploring how ownership chaining works and its limitations. I will then proceed to explore the other two options and I will particularly focus on certificate signing, as this is the preferred method. At first it may seem overly complex, but I will show how it easily can be automated. EXECUTE AS may seem simpler, but I will point out potential problems with it, not the least if you try to use it on server level and consider to set the database as TRUSTWORTHY.
This session is directed towards both developers and DBAs, as this session deals with problems you may face in either role. The level is 400, mainly of the reason that you will encounter many concepts.

Realtime Streaming of Aircraft Data Using Microsoft Fabric
We will use the real-time analytics capabilities of Microsoft Fabric to ingest data about aircraft captured using a Raspberry PI and an antenna from the aircraft's own ADS-B transmissions as they are flying right now!
Built live in the session, we'll use Eventstream to stream the data into KQL Database before visualising the locations of 100s of aircraft in range with a Power BI report displayed using the Icon Map custom visual, enabling us to show the flight tracks and the aircraft's direction of travel. We'll be able to analyse flight numbers, types of planes and which operators are currently flying right now.
Then extending the solution using KQL's powerful spatial analysis functions we'll be able to explore the busiest areas of sky analysing hundreds of millions of rows of flight tracks in seconds.
Microsoft MVP James Dales has used flight data for many years to demonstrate the capabilities of his Icon Map Power BI visual. However, with Microsoft Fabric we have the opportunity to create the end-to-end solution all within the Microsoft Fabric ecosystem and in near real-time!___________________________________________________________________________________
