Global Day of Coderetreat 2020 PDX

Details

The Global Day of Coderetreat is upon us, but the world has changed!

Portland's Coderetreat is moving to a virtual format for our 2020 session, and we're taking a different approach from our previous years, because the idea of "Get away from your work environment, practice code differently" doesn't work the same when you're still sitting at the same desk, with the same house around you as your home and work blend into a ambiguous mix of "do stuff sitting here."

Accordingly, this year's event is also going to be shorter: Officially only 4.5 hours, though you're free to join or leave as your needs demand. We will have longer breaks in between sessions so that people may stretch or take care of other responsibilities in between. We will continue the pratice of working in groups of two or more so we can learn together.

Join your fellow Portland coders to practice software development. Write code together, be exposed to new ideas, and expand your network of friends who are passionate about their craft. Software developers of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds are welcome! (Have a kid interested in coding? Bring them into the conversation!)

Pre-work required: You may se your own development environment with a unit test framework (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unit_testing_frameworks). We will pair up dynamically around what languages people would like to use.

An alternate online development environment is available at https://cyber-dojo.org, supporting over 25 different programming languages with test frameworks, and featuring syntax highlighting and version control.

Background: Coderetreat is a worldwide pattern designed to hone software skills and design practices. Unit testing and Test-Driven Development are emphasized as key practices. Developers use pair programming, ensemble (mob) programming, and discussion to exchange knowledge.

Details about the format and intention at are described at the Coderetreat website (http://coderetreat.org)
