PHP Joburg Meetup: Hacktoberfest

Details

By popular demand, the PHP Joburg Meetup will be hosting a Hackoberfest Event! Let’s get together to turn opensource code into clean laundry…

https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com

OpenSource is fundamental to PHP. The language itself is opensource, as are most of the libraries and packages we use on a regular basis. The same can be said about many of the related languages, tools and software we use (as with Python, Bash, Ansible, Apache or MariaDB) or at least the ecosystems in which they operate (as with Docker or Javascript). In short, our businesses and careers are built on opensource!

If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “wow I really should give back to opensource”, firstly know that you are not alone. Secondly, this is an opportunity to finally do it! Come join your local PHP community for an introduction into opening your first Pull Request and start your journey towards an awesome t-shirt.

If you are a regular maintainer and contributor, firstly know that you are not alone ;) Secondly, we are creating a place for some face-to-face time and collaboration. Come see the faces behind the Github usernames and, maybe, chat to some of your users. If you’re feeling daring, please get in contact with us – we are looking at doing a short opensource panel.

We will start the event with a brief presentation on Hacktoberfest and opensource. This will include some guidance on how to find projects to contribute to and how to go about actually making your contributions. Following this we will have an open hack time which is part code-with-your-laptop and part networking and collaboration on pull requests. Internet, soft drinks and some pizza will be provided. We will then finish with an opensource panel discussion.

What should you bring?

  • Your laptop
  • Power adaptor (and an extension cord if you can)
  • Wear your hacktoberfest shirt from a previous year (if you have one)

Space is limited, so please only RSVP if you intend to attend. Also take note of the Hacktoberfest Code of Conduct (https://do.co/hacktoberconduct)

See you soon
