For those who are unable to take the 5.5 months needed to thru hike the entire trail.
This Meet Up group is for hikers and backpackers looking to go beyond week end warrior status and those looking to gain experience one day, one week end or one week at a time in preparation for a thru-hike of the PCT. Being San Diego based, there will be plenty of opportunties for starting in Campo at the Southern Terminus and conducting multiple hikes along the first 200 miles of Section A and Section B.
There are some great sections within Section A to drive to in convoy, leave a car and drive to a starting point.
Even just a short week end trip of two days hiking and camping overnight will give you good experience to build upon. There are many considerations you have to plan for: gear, food, water, the weather, your physical and mental preparedness, and taking shorter trips will give you a much better insight as to what works for you.
Also meeting and talking with others about all these things is a great way to learn and share best practices.
There's an interesting transition that takes place when you go from car camping to backpacking and then fine tuning that into light weight backpacking for thru-hiking. Learning what is necessary versus what you think you might need is the art and beauty of simplication and ultimately dialing in you and your gear to float down the trail.
This is not a beginners camping or hiking MeetUp and there are other groups that are suited for beginners to camping and hiking.
There's a balance of cost per once, although you don't have to spend fortunes to be able to achieve a lightweight system. Every choice and piece of gear has advantages and disadvantages, and I've purchased and tested several pieces of different gear to see what works best for me. The good news is that if you do buy something that ends up not for you then in most cases retailers, manufacturers and gear swap sites are there to minimize any out of pocket cost.
Ultimately, the PCT would be great to thru hike in one great big outing, however that's not always practical for everyone - therefore as they say about climbing Everest even that goal starts with the same single first step!

The MeetUp policy is as follow: "Under 18 Participation
Meetup members and organizers must be at least 18 years of age. Therefore, Meetup groups must be targeted at, and only offer opportunities for those who are over 18. …"
This MeetUp is organized for those preparing to hike the PCT, albeit in Sections and is for adults only. Even the day hikes or short overnight backpacking trips are meant to simulate longer trips in preparation for multiple days of 15-20 miles over a week, weeks or months. Sorry, no dogs or other pets.
