What we're about

Paddling, Hiking and Riding a Bike are three of my favorite things to do. If you're interested in any of these things, please join us and set some goals for the next year. We will have paddling events for stand up paddle boards, kayaks, single person outriggers ("OC1"), and six person outrigger canoes ("OC6"). Our hikes and bike rides will cover beautiful roads and trails throughout Orange County.

Open to all ages. Some events will be for beginners, some for folks with experience. Paddling events will usually start at the Newport Aquatic Center, 1 Whitecliffs, Newport Beach. Rental equipment is available for kayak and stand up paddle board events. Members of NAC also have free access to many types of paddling equipment.

Outrigger Canoe Trip (OC6) from Newport Aquatic Center

Newport Aquatic Center

PLEASE NOTE THE TIME CHANGE. WE WILL BE GATHERING AT 12:30 pm INSTEAD OF 10:00 am FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.

Have you ever paddled in a six person outrigger canoe (OC6)? Have you ever wanted to give it a try? This is your chance.

Now that the weather is getting warmer and many of our paddlers have been getting stronger and more fit we want to begin extending our trips for some ocean paddling on the SECOND and FOURTH SUNDAYS OF EACH MONTH, as long as weather and sea conditions are conducive. Our ocean going trips will cover 8 - 10 miles and will include up to 2.5 hours of paddling (with intermittent breaks). To qualify for the ocean trips you must have participated in or watched a huli drill. That's where we deliberately flip the boat and everyone learns how to flip it back over, climb in and bail it out. We plan to run huli drills about once a month so new paddlers can learn these essential safety skills.

New paddlers are welcome on all of our Sunday trips, but we will have canoes for them that stay in the harbor on ocean going events. Our trips on the FIRST, THIRD AND FIFTH SUNDAYS are expected to go for about 6 miles and stay in the harbor.

Plan to arrive a little before 12:30 PM. If you are not already a member of NAC, you will need to fill out their release form, and they may request a drivers license. Tell them you will be paddling with the recreational OC6 group. Meet us under the canopy by 12:30 PM to get a paddle and a little instruction, then down to the water to launch.

No charge the first time you paddle with this group, or for anyone who has rented a kayak or a SUP from NAC earlier in the day. Returning paddlers will pay $10 to the NAC for each trip. NAC also offers monthly and annual memberships which include trips in the OC6s.

Wear typical athletic gear that you don't mind getting wet. Bring a mask to wear when we're on the shore. Masks are optional once we're on the water paddling.

Bring bottled water, but leave valuables at home. You might not want to bring your cellphone, unless you have a water proof case. We recommend sunglasses with a leash, sunscreen, and either water shoes, or bare feet. Some folks also prefer to wear gloves, like cycling gloves, while they're paddling.

We'll be out on the water for about 2 hours and will cover 6 - 10 miles.

No pets allowed in the boats.
