Casual BIKE Ride: Fountain Hills - Needle Rock - Fountain Hills

17198 E El Lago Blvd

This popular bike route is a beautiful out-and-back 30 mile ride on a rural paved road with wide shoulders as bike lanes. The McDowell Mountain Road route consists mostly of rolling hills, though there are a few steady and moderate climbs (or downhills, depending on which direction you’re headed). We average a recreational 12-16 mph. You are welcome to ride a fitness speed - the rest of us will catch up with you later in the morning. No one gets left behind. Road bikes are best, but a hybrid would be fine, too. A mountain bike rides slower on pavement, which could be frustrating for you, and for others.

Trip Description:

  • Mileage: 30 miles round trip
  • Trail type: paved 2-lane road with wide-shouldered bike lanes
  • Rating: Moderate
  • Estimated biking time: 2.5 - 3 hours
  • Restrooms at the parking lot, and at the 15-mile mark

Vehicle Parking: Meet in the parking lot behind the mini-mall, near the Fountain Park playground and water park.

Food Option, Post-Hike: Euro Pizza, 12645 N Saguaro Blvd, Fountain Hills (by the lake)

What to Bring (besides a bike and biking shoes)

  • Helmet (REQUIRED)
  • Sunglasses/eye protection
  • Light jacket (for the ride and/or outdoor meal later)
  • Gloves
  • Sunscreen lotion
  • Water bottles or Camelbak type (2 qts or 2L)
  • Snack (ex. energy bar, trail mix)
  • Spare tube for your tire
  • (optional) cable lock or a way to secure your bike if we go eat after the ride.

Carpool Options (once at the carpool location, self-organize whoever shows up, then arrive at the event by start time).

NOTE: We do not guarantee rides, or that anyone will even show up at the location. It is just offered as a possibility for those who would like to self-organize to carpool.

  • N.Scottsdale - Walmart (15355 N Northsight Blvd, Scottsdale, AZ 85260) meet in front of the Walmart garden center at 9:15 AM and depart by 9:25 AM.
  • Mesa - Home Depot (6838 E Superstition Springs Blvd, Mesa, AZ 85209) exit S. Power Rd, meet in front of Burger King at 9:05 AM and depart by 9:15 AM.
