What we're about

"People Making Portraits"

Do You Draw/Paint/Create Portraits...or...Want To? Select "Read More" for all the details!

Who We Are:

We’re a “virtual” group of portrait makers meeting online, via Zoom:

---developing and using our skills and simply delighting in the process of non-photographic portraiture

---oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, pencil, etc, etc, etc.

---all by doing portraits of each other online! And we post them on MeetUp so we can learn from, and enjoy, each other’s creativity.

EVERY Thursday of the month (Except for 4th Thursdays below, and holidays) we will always be ONLINE: DRAWING/PAINTING/ MAKING Portraits--Starting at 12:00 noon and continuing until 1:30pm...WITH a bonus time from 1:30 til 3:00 for those who wish to stay longer! Come late or leave early, make it fit your day!

-----------------------------------------------

We're also "Doing Lunch and Talking Portraiture" online:

---Talking about our favorite materials/techniques/books/videos/classes and questions we have!

---With occasional "live" guest artist interviews or short art video to watch and discuss!

---Eating, sharing, asking, laughing!

---Our lunches are a wonderful gathering of kindred spirits : )

4th THURSDAY of the month will always be our ONLINE: We're "DOING LUNCH" & TALKING PORTRAITURE! and we will be expanding it to allow time to have periodic artists' interviews or discuss a short video and continue to have time for our spontaneous topics that arise each time we "do lunch" : ) We will still start at 12:00 noon-1:30pm to allow for interviews/videos/spontaneous topics : )

About Our Name---People Making Portraits:

PEOPLE---We are “people” making portraits---Some of us may be “artists,” some of us may simply “do art,” or “draw, or sketch, or paint, or create,” some of us may be beginners, some more experienced, some amateur, some may be professional---we’re a collaborative gathering of varying skill levels and artistic interpretations/genres! We’re all different, BUT we all love portrait making : )

MAKING---We are people “making” portraits, in what ever non-photographic manner we like: realistic, stylistic, abstract, impressionistic, surrealistic, etc, etc, AND etc.

PORTRAITS---We are people making “portraits” which we define as any non-photographic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and mood of the person as interpreted by the portrait maker.

When/Where We Meet:

We meet online about every three weeks from 12:00pm till 3:00pm CST (to ease time zone differences). Come as often as you’d like and stay for as much, or as little, of that time as you’d like. We’ll do only a few portraits each time, finishing them while we’re online, or later if desired, with opportunity for feedback, snacks/breaks, discussion, and laughter.

What Inspires This:

Julia Kay’s book, Portrait Revolution, is a profound influence on what “sharing portraiture” can look like.

Take a look at her book here with wonderful examples of the art within:

Book Review: Portrait Revolution by Julia L. Kay - YouTube

And here is Julia writing about her search, as a young artist, for community and camaraderie in the world of art:

Portrait Revolution | Read It Forward

In her book, Julia talks of groups like ours enjoying each other’s energy and influence, and having ”the freedom to interpret the subjects in limitless styles, and in turn you should be open to many different interpretations of yourself....enjoy yourself, experiment, don’t worry about mistakes and enjoy meeting and interacting with your portrait artist partners.”

Top Ten Items That Matter:

1---We are not a class, though we learn a lot from each other and enjoy each other’s presence and encouragement and energy!

2---There is absolutely no cost involved in participating. Meetup FAQ's state that "Meetup members and organizers must be at least 18 years of age. Therefore, groups must be targeted at, and only offer opportunities for those who are over 18." Though we're not set up for family/youth participation, there are other art opportunities available online worth exploring!

3---There is no rush to finish a portrait...you can post it later for others to enjoy. For many, though, finishing it online offers advantages.

4---Though clothing and posture can really augment a portrait, our focus is always on the face itself which fills much of the screen to allow detail.

5---Everyone poses clothed due to the diversity of our participants and our emphasis on portraiture rather than figure drawing.

6---Posing for portraits is voluntary. We only have a few portrait sitters per session.

7---If you have volunteered to pose, be sure to have tried out your lighting and computer camera location so that your face will be well-lit, filling most of the screen, and you’ll be comfortable for a 20-30 minute sitting.

8---Any portraits we produce of each other, and post on our Meetup page, need to be copyright-free so we all, especially those posing, can share them freely and use in whatever manner.

9---Whether you want any feedback on your work is totally your choice! If you do, you can request “encouraging critiques” that emphasize the positives, or “technical critiques” that emphasize possible improvements, or choose to ”self-critique” and share your own feelings about your work---or any combination of the above---we want to be supportive, constructive and encouraging. We are ALL sensitive souls whether being critiqued by others or by ourselves. Anytime you share your own feelings about your work is a chance for ALL of us to relate and share perspectives : )

10—We’ll always be tweaking our procedures/sessions to maximize their usefulness for us and our enjoyment of being together—so share your thoughts and suggestions : )

Please contact Joe Farley with any questions and to become a part of this wonderful adventure in portraiture!
