This Meetup is intended to provide a space where those with a doctoral degree working in academia, and outside of academia (ex. industry, technology, etc.) can come together to discuss topics that are distinct to this community. Professional and research opportunities can also be found on the group's bulletin board, under 'Discussions', but is only available to members.
Prior to teaching at the college level, I taught high school for five years. The high school teachers’ lounge was a place where I could find empathy, guidance, and the kind of information that could not be found elsewhere. While there are many advantages to teaching on the college level, I have yet to find a place that quite captures the dynamics of the high school teachers’ lounge and all the valuable insights that it had to offer. It is my hope that this meetup group will capture those dynamics. I will try to choose venues that will facilitate such conversations.
PLEASE NOTE: The basic subscription plan for this Meetup group limits membership to 50, but the size of the group is at the discretion of the organizer(s). Please understand that membership is not guaranteed upon application. If interest in this Meetup exceeds 50, I may at that time request membership dues to cover an upgrade to the subscription plan.
· Safety: You must upload a recent photo when you apply to join this meetup. ALL members should be recognized easily when they attend a meetup for the first time, post comments, or host events on this site. Please post a picture of yourself that has been taken within the past 5 years, where your facial features are not obscured (ex. sunglasses). You don’t look like a flower, a clown, or a gray silhouette of a head - NO EXCEPTIONS.
· Attendance: This is a small group meetup that will max out at 6-8 diners for reservations, mostly in small restaurants. Please be considerate of your hosts in this and other meetups, and RSVP “yes” only if you can commit to attending. Changes to RSVPs within 36 hours of a meetup date, for meetups that allow for a limited number of attendees, will be posted as no-shows. Members with 2 no shows or those who are inactive for over 2 months will lose membership, as will those with a history of frequent RSVP changes.
