'PhDs in LA' is a support group for doctoral students and graduates in the greater Los Angeles area. Whether you are in a Ph.D. program, have recently graduated from one, or earned your Ph.D. many years ago, this group can help you meet engaging scholars from all fields and find colleagues who can write with you and laugh with you about the quirks of the academic life over a nice glass of wine. All universities, majors, and statuses of Ph.D. completion are welcomed.
This group was founded in August 2013, and has held writing, networking, and social meetups primarily in West LA and Pasadena. We are a steadily growing active community and offer events on a daily basis, most of which focus on productivity and writing accountability. We use the 'Pomodoro technique' (in short: 25 mins of writing, 5 mins of break). Generally, we do not critique each other’s work, because of the diverse academic backgrounds of our members.
Organizing events through meetup is not free and we ask members that regularly attend our writing sessions to contribute on a voluntary basis to help our group active and growing. This also helps us to not have to charge a mandatory membership fee.
Dr. Halina Tran is the current organizer of the group. Dr. Whitey Burke took over as organizer from Dr. Julia Raz in April 2016 and organized the group until July 2019. The founder is Dr. Karen Crozer.
