What we're about

Are you a competitive athlete looking for a new challenge - or maybe just someone trying to find a fun new activity to try this summer? If so, here's an opportunity you won't want to pass up! The Phantom Dragons want to introduce you to the fun and exciting sport of Dragon Boat Racing! We invite you to attend one of our Saturday morning practices at Lake Arbor in Arvada, and find out why dragon boating is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world!

We offer: • Professionally Trained Coaches • Year-Around Practice Sessions • Practices and Events suitable for all ages and ability levels • Opportunities to compete in dragon boat competitions (both locally and out-of-state) • Connction to a fun, active group who enjoy the sport and culture of dragon boating!

Members of the Phantom Dragons included several of the “founding fathers” of the Dragonboat Racing Association of Colorado (DRACO). Our goal is to promote dragon boat racing in Colorado, and to train dragon boat teams to compete in local, national and international races. Our crew includes several paddlers who have raced for nearly 10 years, and six who have attended week-long dragon boat training camps in Florida. Head Coach Michael Boyd (Captain Bligh!) holds Dragon Boat Canada Level II (Competitive Team) coaching certification, and three team members have completed Level I courses. (The Phantom Dragons has among its ranks four out of the five certified dragon boat coaches in the entire State of Colorado.) In addition, the team has access to a relative wealth of training equipment, including two 10-man dragon boats, three outrigger canoes (an OC-2 and two OC-1s), and a pool simulator for winter training. We train hard, but we also make sure everyone has FUN!

In 2009, the Phantom Dragons team raced in the inaugural Rose Regatta in Las Vegas, marking an important milestone. That was the first time Colorado sent a dragon boat team to compete outside of the Denver area! Since then, we have followed up with two trips to San Diego, three to Arizona, and an appearance last fall in the San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival. Most recently, we raced in Arizona in March, and brought home Silver medals in our division. Although our team is still far from a top team in terms of competitive performance, it has been very successful in putting Colorado dragon boating “on the map” on a national level, as recognized in a letter we recently received from Senator Mark Udall.

Our next major event will be the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, scheduled for July 27-28. Start paddling now, and you could be racing with us in July! A video clip or our team racing in San Francisco can be seen at:
