With in-person meetings on hold because of the pandemic, I'd love to get us playing together safely from home using JamKazam. This app is engineered to reduce lag time over the internet to an imperceptible amount, allowing for real-time ensemble playing. The technology works, but the hardware and software need to be set up properly. I have been working to become knowledgeable enough to guide members through the setup process.

If you would like to give this a try, please follow the instructions below (before the meeting) for setting up the JamKazam app and equipment.
We'll start the meeting on Zoom to address any problems you may have encountered with setup. Then we'll start a JamKazam session and see how it goes!

Instructions to set up JamKazam using the headphone jack on your laptop: (Desktops are different and need different equipment)

  1. Download and install JamKazam from www.jamkazam.com (free for PC and Mac). Create a user ID and profile.

  2. Connect the laptop to the router with an Ethernet cable (WIFI is too slow). If your laptop does not have an Ethernet port, you can use an adapter. Pianists: if your router is not near your piano, you can buy a 35- or 50-foot Ethernet cable on eBay for about $10.

  3. You will need an external microphone for adequate sound quality. Choose one according to your instrument and budget. Make sure it has a Y-splitter plug for microphone input and headphone output, or buy one separately. Make sure it uses a 3.5mm mini plug.

The microphone that I use is the "Professional Audio Condenser Microphone”. I bought it on eBay for about $20 from Zenictech. It is also available from several other sellers. It includes the Y-splitter and a desktop tripod. But any good microphone will do.

  1. You will need headphones or earbuds to avoid feedback. Make sure it uses a 3.5mm mini plug. You may also need an extension cable for comfort. These are available online for less than $5.

  2. Once you have your equipment connected, go through the Audio Gear setup process in JamKazam. You will want to use the System Default profile.
