About the Author:
George Packer is a longtime New Yorker staff writer who has written extensively on U.S. foreign policy, and who is perhaps best known for his 2005 book The Assassin's Gate detailing the way the Bush administration bungled the 2003 Iraq invasion. His latest book, Our Man: Richard Holbrooke and the End of the American Century, charts the career of the influential American diplomat who served under every Democratic president from JFK to Barack Obama, from Vietnam to Afghanistan. Holbrooke, who died in 2010, was a champion of the American-led "liberal international order" of the post-WWII era, and he was best known as the architect of the Dayton Peace Accords that ended the Balkan War in 1995. George Packer argues that the rocky peace Holbrooke helped engineer in the Balkans looked like a victory at the time but was actually the last gasp of America's moral leadership on the world stage, which has continued to deteriorate during the War on Terror and Trump's presidency.
