EVENT DESCRIPTION:
Join FAIR for a screening of The Woke Reformation (90 minutes) followed by a Q&A with director Travis Brown, animator Sam Lingle, and special guest Peter Boghossian, with host Melissa Chen.

The premise of this documentary is that there has been a new reformation of public thought - the so-called "Great Awokening" - and it needs to be understood and dismantled. The Woke Reformation is a documentary series for those concerned about the new cultish religion of "wokeness".

"Wokeness" can be defined as the belief that racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, fatphobia, ableism, and other forms of prejudice are not merely incidental in our society but "systemic" and "institutional" in the form of a white supremacist cis-hetero-patriarchy. The "woke" activists believe that any sort of socio-economic disparity must be due to past or present discrimination, not biological or cultural differences that make one group more successful on average in certain fields.

This new generation of activists rejects older liberal ideals of a "colorblind" society that offers "equal opportunity", seeing this as a way to hide less overt forms of discrimination. Instead, their goal is "equity" (equal outcomes) and to achieve that they believe white people must be trained to reject "whiteness", just as men must be trained to reject "toxic masculinity". They believe that various radical reforms are required to extirpate the pervasive discrimination from our public & private institutions and to raise the consciousness of the general public, and this process includes restrictions on freedom of speech, freedom of the press and academic freedom, as well as the "cancelling" - i.e. deplatforming, firing, blacklisting - of anyone who opposes these reforms.

The series will help people understand the origins of this totalitarian ideology in Marxism, critical theory & postmodernism. It will also explain why it has spread so rapidly, how it's eating away at the foundations of democratic pluralism, and what people can do to push back.

The series features interviews with Peter Boghossian, Helen Pluckrose, James Lindsay, Douglas Murray, Asra Nomani, Corey Drayton, Nancy Rommelman, and more.
