An Intro to WordPress and SEO

Join us for the July WordPress Meetup on Tuesday, July 23rd at 7pm. The meetup will take place at the Colket Translational Research Building (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia research campus).

An Intro to WordPress and SEO by Alx Block

In this introduction to WordPress and SEO we’ll be covering some of the fundamentals of Search Engine Optimization, and how to put them to good use on your WordPress site. We’ll touch base on everything from how the search engines see your site to writing the content that will bring you visitors. We’ll concentrate on the three major components of SEO which are Code, Content, and Community, and discuss the plugins that will set you up in the right way.

Speaker: Alx Block (@alxblock).

I am a beginner too and I strongly agree with Karen. Last night I did learn a lot about SEO. I got some help on an issue I had with a theme. It's Very cool, I definitely encourage you to join this meetup group.

In response to the discussion on Sitemaps last night, XML Sitemaps are a good way for crawlers to discover links that might not be linked on your site anywhere. Crawlers will follow all the links on your site, but if you have some isolated pages, the Sitemap will tell the crawlers about them.

Finally, image Sitemaps are becoming more and more popular so users who are searching via Google Image Search can find your images, and ultimately link back to your site.

Images in WP are just posts and they are "exposed" (to being indexed) like any other post content. There's actually a setting in Yoast SEO that redirects traffic to the images back to the post that contains them. Else, WP will typically just render a default attachment (images are attachments) page.

Yes, agreed an image site map can't hurt. But the fact is, Google's game is so high at this point that they can't afford for humans to get things right. In short, no site maps isn't ideal (obviously) but it's not the death wish it was even just a couple+ years ago. It hard to image Google not plugging that hole themselves already.

Great MeetUp. Thx WDS. FYI - Hosting was mentioned a couple time last night. WPMU is doing a series on a few of the popular hosting / WP hosting cos. I believe this is the first one http://wpmu.org/page-ly-blazingly-fast-managed-wordpress-hosting/

Do any designer/developers VERY familiar with Wordpress and hopefully Genesis themes offer their services on a freelance basis? Our company has used someone remotely who's not great with WordPress and our needs have since expanded. I'd love to talk to someone more local to Philly who is interested in freelance work (our site is live so it's mostly changes here and there, new pages, hosting and SEO support, some design revisions, etc.). Email me offline ([masked]) if anyone's interested. I'm not looking for an agency for this, just a solo wordpress veteran.

Alx explained SEO in a way that it felt very manageable and even a bit "fun". The audience comments were helpful too.

Worth the drive from Mercer County, NJ...even when we found out our car battery was dead in the lower level of the Wood garage (when trying to get home).

Thank goodness for AAA battery service!!!!!!!!! It all worked out.

Was expecting more of a Wordpress only SEO focus, but while that might have been best for me, I'm sure others benefitted from the wider focused approach. Did learn about lots of new tools so we're good to go. Well worth the trip.

this meetup mixed beginner, mid-level & advanced content. all were good. altho i wonder if splitting the expertise levels to individual meet-ups is logistically possible? has anyone executed associated online meet-ups as well? I love joining both in-person...and virtual meet-ups.

    great work. thx again.

Learned a TON as always. Seems like I leave with at least 4 new plug-ins and a theme or two to investigate further at each WordPress meetup. Really helping me to broaden my WP knowledge base quickly. There's SO MUCH though! Thanks Doug and Axl. (and 4 pizza too).
Love the Colket meeting space too, comfortable and a great setting for learning.

This is an event that I would very much like to attend, but cannot due to a previous engagement. I am hoping that it might be repeated in the future, if it proves to be successful. Or at least a similar event!
