What is NECSS?
Pronounced “Nexus”, NECSS stands for the Northeast Conference on Science & Skepticism. It's a conference dedicated to science & critical thinking held annually in New York City. NECSS hosts leading scientists, educators, and artists who educate & engage attendees through individual presentations, panel discussions, and performances.

Who is NECSS for?
NECSS attracts hundreds of people, from all different walks of life, from around the world. It is a forum for the general public to mingle with scientists, educators, philosophers, medical professionals, students, and many other people that you might not ordinarily meet.

How can I participate?
While NECSS is usually a 4-day live event hosted in New York City, due to the COVID pandemic this year it will be streamed live online over 2 days.

Which speakers will be featured on Day 2?

  • Scott E. Page - professor of Complexity, Social Science, and Management at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and author of the book "The Model Thinker".

  • Richard Wiseman - experimental psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire. He's a fellow for the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry and creator of the YouTube channel Quirkology.

  • George Hrab - musician, composer & podcaster known for exploring skeptic and science themes in his work. He'll play music and be the MC for the event.

  • Shane Campbell-Staton - evolutionary biologist at UCLA who studies how phenotypes respond to human activity that affects their environment. He also cohosts the "Biology of Superheroes" podcast.

  • Steven Novella - neurologist and assistant professor at Yale University School of Medicine. He is a fellow for the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, the executive editor of and regular contributor to the Science-Based Medicine blog, and the host of the "Skeptics Guide to the Universe" podcast.

  • Cara Santa Maria - Emmy-winning journalist and science communicator with a background in psychology & neuroscience. Since 2015, she's been a correspondent on "Real Future" for Fusion and a co-host of the "Skeptics Guide to the Universe" podcast.

  • Leighann Lord - standup comedian, writer & actress. She's a former cohost of the Star Talk radio podcast, and as of April 2020, she became a cohost of the Center for Inquiry's "Point of Inquiry" podcast.

  • David L. Hu - mathematician, roboticist, and biologist at Georgia Tech. His research centers on animal behavior and movement, and he's the author of the book "How To Walk On Water and Climb Up Walls".

  • Siouxsie Wiles - microbiologist who specializes in infectious diseases, who's also a writer, artist, curator, and media science communicator. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she joined with "Spinoff" cartoonist Toby Morris to make the science of the disease clear & understandable.

  • Ann Druyan - award-winning writer, producer, and director specializing in science communication. She was the creative director of NASA's Voyager Interstellar Message Project, and co-wrote the PBS documentary series "Cosmos" hosted by Carl Sagan. She's the producer & writer of the 2014 sequel, "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" and "Cosmos: Possible Worlds", as well as the book of the same name.
