Effective Altruism: Combining Reason and Altruism

Effective Altruism (EA) is a new movement around the not so new idea of combining evidence and reasons with charity and altruism. It focuses on using our limited time and resources to do as much good as we can. Michael Dello-Iacovo will introduce some of the key concepts of Effective Altruism and discuss some examples and the underlying philosophy. He will also consider some of the common objections to aspects of Effective Altruism.

BIO: Michael Dello-Iacovo served as CEO of Effective Altruism Australia in 2016 and has been involved with local EA groups in Adelaide and Sydney, including co-founding The Life You Can Save Adelaide. He has a background in science with training in geology, geophysics and climate science, and is currently working on his PhD in space science. Michael has also worked in the energy industry and is the deputy convener for the Animal Justice Party NSW.
