Bayesian Variable Selection Procedure for Model-Based Clustering
UMass Statistics Seminar Tanzy Love, U Rochester Biostatistics Bayesian Variable Selection Procedure for Model-Based Clustering Abstract In identifying subpopulations within data, true group structure can be masked by extraneous variables, thus motivating the need for a variable selection procedure to identify important variables for model-based clustering. Currently in the clustering literature, empirical Bayes methods tackle the simultaneous model-based clustering and variable selection problem. These approaches have limitations, primarily in the assumption that a single locally optimal solution exists. We propose a fully Bayesian approach, in which a set of globally optimal solutions are found using the reversible-jump Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Our method permits modeling of the full likelihood in which the proportion of cluster membership, mean, and covariance parameters of each component are estimated. We also incorporate variance constraint selection with covariance constraints from Banfield and Raftery [1993]. Our method allows dimension changing in the variables, variance constraints, and group subspaces, resulting in a complete representation of the clustering model with simultaneous variable selection.

What we're about

This is a Statistical and Data Science user group for the Pioneer Valley and Five College Area.

We were founded in January, 2013 originally as an R users group. However, we have become more of an all-purpose Statistics and Data Science meetup group, hosting and cross-listing public talks and events related to these fields.

The goal of this meetup is to provide a central repository/bulletin board for many events data-science/statistics related that are occurring in Western Mass, and specifically the Pioneer Valley. We post or cross-list events/workshops/lectures from area academic departments that relate to Data Science and Statistics. We also create and host events of our own. If you know of a relevant event that we haven't listed but you think we should, we encourage you to post it directly. Also, if you have an idea for a workshop or would like to host/give a talk or workshop, please let us know.
