Mah Jongg in Shadyside!

Panera Bread - Bakery Square

Join us on Tuesdays for American Mah Jong! Players begin arriving around 5:00 PM, and play begins table by table as soon as we have three or four players plus a set. (We usually have 2-4 tables.) By 6:15 or so, most players have arrived. Players rotate among the tables... at the end of each game, East walks around to see if another table is close to the end of their game, so that two players can swap places. Play must end by 9PM when Panera closes. Tables begin wrapping up play any time after 8PM or so. PARKING: the signs in the parking lot say that parking is limited to one hour. Most of us find spaces in the lot, and have never had a problem. (This could change... !) The garage is free for three hours, which is usually plenty of time for Mahj playing. Note: if the weather is bad, you can leave the garage at the hotel (level 2), go down one floor inside the hotel (elevator or stairs), enter Panera through the back door, and never go outside at all. If you are a new player, or if you have not played for a very long time, we highly recommend that you take a Mah Jong 101 beginner class before playing with us - beginner classes are offered every few months. Mah jong is a wonderful game, but it's hard to learn by just watching others play! Please order your 2019 card from the National Mah Jongg League, here: http://www.nationalmahjonggleague.org/ Amazon.com also carries the cards. Note that you want the NMJL card, and no other! (There are some colorful alternatives out there.. but we play NMJL card and rules.) Experienced players -- please bring your cards and please bring a set if you have one. Please do not bring any outside food or beverages into Panera! Instead, please plan to buy *something* from Panera, even if it's just a beverage or a cookie, to support their willingness to host us.

Mah Jongg 101 -- BEGINNER LESSON

Panera Bread - Bakery Square

We will gather at 5PM, wrapping up around 7:30PM. Your teacher will introduce you to the tiles, the card, and the game. After the intro we usually have time for one or two games. Please try to arrive on time for this class! PARKING: With a little patience and luck, you can usually get a space in front of the Panera. (The signs say one hour - but most of us park there for Mah Jongg and no one has had a problem.) The garage is free for three hours. Also, if the weather is bad - park in the garage. Take the garage elevator to the second floor to the hotel. Take the stairs down. Enter the Panera through the back door... thereby avoiding the nasty weather altogether. You will not need your own 2019 Mah Jong card tonight... we will loan you a card for the class. You will need to buy your own card -- you can buy a card from the National Mah Jong League or from Dorothy. We will provide a free handout which covers all of the basic rules. You will not need a set - although over time, you may want to buy one! You can eat during the first hour of the class, so feel free to grab some food when you arrive at Panera. Any questions? You can reach us through the meetup group, or email us through the Pittsburgh Mah Jong web site: http://pittsburghmahjong.com/contact/
