Come sing songs from Les Miserables with PopUp Broadway!
at ArtsCenter, Carrboro 6:30PM Doors - 7PM Show $8 Students, $13 Adults (w/ticket fee and tax added) Tickets available HERE: Come sing these songs from Les Misérables! Remember, everyone is welcome, regardless of vocal ability or experience. Come if you love to sing and come if you love Broadway and musicals! Remind yourself of the two songs that we will learn, record and film - "Do You Hear The People Sing?" and" I Dreamed A Dream." "The Confrontation" will be a bonus sing-along song that will not be recorded. Are you new to PopUp Broadway? PopUp Broadway is conducted by Dr. Allan Friedman. Allan is the music director at Durham’s Judea Reform Congregation and artistic director of Women’s Voices Chorus, and was a choral conductor for Duke Chapel Music for eight years. He is joined by Dr. Deborah Hollis, a much-loved area accompanist and piano teacher. Deborah plays the piano as the singers learn and perform the material. “This is a low-pressure, high-fun event. You don’t need to be able to sing well, and you don’t need to know anyone else who is going,” says conductor Allan Freidman. “No one will judge you for your voice or your knowledge. It’s a chance to make great music in a welcoming setting with minimal commitment. Singing, especially group singing, makes you feel good!”Do you like to sing? Do you have fantasies of being on a Broadway stage? Do you adore musicals and Broadway shows? Did you sing and perform in high school or college and do you miss it? If you sing in the shower, in your car, or along to your favorite soundtrack recording then you belong in PopUp Chorus Broadway! At our monthly events, folks come together to learn and perform two fabulous show tunes. We spend about 40 minutes learning each song before moving on to a final performance, which is filmed and recorded. We always have one or two sing-along bonus songs for even MORE fun! Everybody is welcome! We are a drop-in chorus that invites all people who love to sing - regardless of experience - to join us. No audition or monthly commitment is required – just show up at The ArtsCenter to sing. It is never too early to start familiarizing yourself with the material for this event! Feel free to listen to the original cast recordings of these two songs, or any of the other versions you will find on YouTube. Remember, Allan will teach these songs, so it is fine to attend even if you have not heard the songs before. You will learn them and have great fun! Come be a part of the chorus (line), ensemble and cast. PopUp Broadway is everybody’s opening night, your chance to sing the show tunes you love, and maybe even discover a new song and show! Drinks available from the bar. Free parking in the multi-story parking deck adjacent to The ArtsCenter

What we're about

Do you like to sing? Have you thought about joining a chorus but are too busy to do it on a regular basis? Do you sing in the shower, sing in your car or sing along to the radio? If the answer is yes, then you belong in PopUp Chorus! At each of our events, we sing iconic, fun and familiar pop songs, accompanied by a live band.

Come sing songs that you love in a setting where everybody is welcome, regardless of ability. PopUp Chorus is the only chorus where you can show up when you want and skip it when you’re too busy. No audition, no weekly commitment, just show up and sing.

At each event, singers arrive and learn two songs, which we perform, record and film on the same night, guided by our encouraging conductors. PopUp Chorus is never the same group twice and we embrace imperfection!

PopUp Chorus has gathered attention from the media, as well as accolades from musicians liking the PopUp Chorus versions of their songs, including David Bowie, Zooey Deschanel, Duran Duran, They Might Be Giants, Sufjan Stevens and many more. “All hail the PopUp Chorus in Durham, NC. This defines joy”. They Might Be Giants tweeted in August 2015.

Founded by arts entrepreneur Lauren Bromley Hodge, PopUp Chorus events are held in various Durham and Chapel Hill/Carrboro, NC venues. Singing is a great way to blow off steam, have fun and create music and community.
