What we're about

*Note: Due to Covid19 we are not presently meeting in person but we are meeting virtually open Zoom. Contact Greg for more information on how to join those meetings*

Our name, ASAP, reflects the urgency of need to address the inequities faced by the autism community. Presently our focus is on creating a greater sense of community amongst people on the autism spectrum, in order to combat feelings of isolation and disconnect that too often leads to suicide. Suicide is the main driver of our short life expectancy of 56 years of age.

We are a community advocacy, social, and support group run by and for adults on the autism spectrum. We are presently seeking support and in the application process to be an affiliate group of the Autism Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN), and are striving to have a model that embodies the principles for which that group stands.

We are about community, learning more about what it means to be on the autism spectrum, and advocating for changes that improve the quality of lives of people on the autism spectrum. We are an inclusive group, and are not imposing criteria for membership beyond that we will be run by, and our agenda will be determined by, people on the autism spectrum. Our focus will be on what we have in common, what we can do to make our mutual lives more meaningful, and not on what makes us different from one another. W are first and foremost, a community advocacy, social, and support group, run by and for adults on the autism spectrum.

We will be employing a Popular Education model towards community organizing. Learn more about Popular Education here: http://www.practicingfreedom.org/offerings/popular-education/

Please feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss innovative ways as to how you could be involved.

Adult Asperger & Autism Support Group

This is the MeetUp page for a long running support group for Autistic/Aspergers adults in Portland, OR. We are currently only meeting VIRTUALLY.

YOU MUST BE AUTISTIC/ASPERGER IN ORDER TO ATTEND OUR GROUP. The only other requirement is for you to participate in introductions at the start of the meeting, or introduce yourself if you arrive late.

We created this page to reach more people, but you may also find information about our group here: https://aasapdx.org.

This meeting will be structured. The group discusses topics of interest to us, and we spur those discussions by providing providing written material at the time of the meeting, which we take turns reading out loud and then stopping for comment and discussion. Reading out loud is not a requirement for attendance.

I will send out a reminder email on the Saturday before the meeting with what the meeting topic will be and other details.

Yes you may, be late, leave early, come and go, eat, knit, draw, fidget, etc. during our meetings.
