About:
Welcome to the hub for all things in Portland related to effective altruism and rationality aka PEAR!
Effective altruism is about using reason and evidence to do the most good we can with our limited resources.
In the rationality community, we aspire to improve our reasoning and decision making and address the biases that prevent us from holding true beliefs and accomplishing our goals.
Please feel free to come out, even if, like many of us, you feel awkward, feel that you're not the typical rationalist or effective altruist, are worried that people won't like you, are just curious, or have read this far, etc.
Events:
All events will be posted here on Meetup, on our public calendar, and sent out from our mailing list. You can also check out the previous events we've hosted, and keep the conversation going on our Discord. PEAR's Secular Solstice
NW Thurman St & NW 14th Ave, Portland, OR 97209, Portland, Or, USYou are all welcome and invited to PEARs Secular Solstice for this year on December 21st! We would like to welcome both newcomers and old souls to join us. This will be an event full of games, mingling, music, food, and reflection.
It is also a potluck and we invite everyone to bring any food they would like to share. We encourage bringing vegan food and labelling your food's allergies (tree nuts/peanuts especially!).
The Solstice Program itself is an opportunity for us to reflect on humanity's darkest hours and how we might triumph to arrive at a day Brighter Than Today.
Schedule:
6:00 - Doors open
6:00-7:00 - Games, potluck, and community time.
7:00 - 8:45 - Solstice program
8:45 - 9:30 - Games, community time, and food will be available again
9:30 - Doors Close.
