Welcome to the hub for all things in Portland related to effective altruism and rationality aka PEAR!
Effective altruism is about using reason and evidence to do the most good we can with our limited resources.
In the rationality community, we aspire to improve our reasoning and decision making and address the biases that prevent us from holding true beliefs and accomplishing our goals.
Please feel free to come out, even if, like many of us, you feel awkward, feel that you're not the typical rationalist or effective altruist, are worried that people won't like you, are just curious, or have read this far, etc.

All events will be posted here on Meetup, on our public calendar, and sent out from our mailing list. You can also check out the previous events we've hosted, and keep the conversation going on our Discord. PEAR's Secular Solstice
Acting for Kids and Teen, 734 NW 14th Ave. Ste 101, Portland, OR, USWe're having a secular solstice event again this year, please come celebrate with us!
Following in the tradition of the New York and Bay Area solstices, we're doing a full program of music, speeches, and even a (very short) play. This year the theme is, simply, suffering.
For those who haven't been before, you can get a bit of a flavor of them from the Bay Area ones that have been recorded and posted to Youtube.
We will provide food, but solstice is also a potluck and we invite everyone to bring any food they would like to share. We encourage bringing vegan food and labelling your food's allergies (tree nuts/peanuts especially!).
Details:
- Friday, December 19th Doors at 5pm to get set up, event starts at 6:30pm
- Location: 734 NW 14th Ave STE 101 Avenue, Portland, OR 97209 Food: provided
- Cost: no entrance fee.
- Donations ($10-20/pp) strongly encouraged, as space rental isn't cheap sadly.
